On Tuesday 5 November 2024, the General Directorate of Syriac Culture and Arts in the Iraqi Kurdistan Region organised a workshop at the Syriac Heritage Museum’s hall in Ankawa District, in cooperation with the Iraqi Culture, Tourism and Antiquities Ministry’s Conference Palace Department, to discuss ways to protect Iraqi components from hate speech.
The workshop came in preparation for the “Hate Speech” conference scheduled to be held in the capital Baghdad, in cooperation between the General Directorate of Syriac Culture and Arts in the Iraqi Kurdistan Region and the Iraqi Culture, Tourism and Antiquities Ministry’s Conference Palace Department, which will discuss the necessity of issuing legal legislation to enhance community peace and create a safe environment, as well as to identify effective mechanisms and means to combat hate speech in the country.
The workshop was attended by the Director General of Syriac Culture and Arts in the Iraqi Kurdistan Region, Kaldo Ramzi Oghanna, the Director General of the Iraqi Culture Ministry’s Conference Palace Department, Dr. Muntaser al-Hasnawi, a number of representatives of religious minorities in Iraq, as well as researchers, academics and legal experts interested in minority affairs.
