The General Directorate of Syriac Culture and Arts mourns the passing of former Iraqi national team player Gorgis Ishmael, who died on Sunday, May 18, 2025, after a long illness.
On behalf of its General Director, staff, and employees, the Directorate extends its deepest condolences and heartfelt sympathy to his family, loved ones, and the Iraqi sports community. We pray that God grants the late Gorgis Ishmael His boundless mercy and gives his family strength and patience during this difficult time.
It is worth noting that the late Gorgis Ishmael was one of the most prominent athletes from our community. He played for the Iraqi national football team and made significant contributions to Iraqi football between 1962 and 1969 as a player, and later served as an administrator during the 1970s and 1990s.
